GoodData demo workspace comes pre-loaded with many data and measures which you can use to construct insights and dashboards. In this section, you will learn how we created some of the demo workspace metrics, how to create and save a new metric, and reuse it.
To create or modify existing metrics, all GoodData users can use Metric Editor. Metrics Editor is a part of the workspace management tools. As a result, it uses different naming nomenclature.
This simple table is the only thing that you need to remember.

If you want to create a new calculated measure, use Metrics Editor and create a new metric which will then appear in your Data Catalog section along other measures.

Why You Should Save Your Metrics
When you build a metric in the Metric Editor, you use the GoodData's own query language called MAQL (Multi-dimensional Analytical Query Language). It allows you to build reusable metrics and filters and avoid building one-off SQL queries in a web user interface, rather than editing bulky JSON files.
MAQL allows you to create metrics with a simple expression language, and it also allows you to combine simple expressions into powerful complex metrics.
In the following sections, you will explore the power of MAQL in more detail.
